David Yates, of Charlbury, directs Harry Potter
DAVID Yates might be best known for directing gritty television thrillers - but when the call came to go to the Hogwarts School of Wizardry, there was no way he was going to miss out on the chance to make a Harry Potter movie.
Mr Yates, who has lived in Charlbury for 15 years, was as surprised as anyone when he was offered the chance to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the fifth blockbuster in the series.
Overseeing Harry Potter's first kiss must have seemed far from some of his gritty television dramas such as Sex Traffic. But he grabbed the opportunity, and has formed a close working relationship with Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry Potter, and Oxford actress Emma Watson, who plays Hermione Granger.
The all-important summons to Hogwarts came during a cliff walk in Cornwall, where he was on holiday.
Mr Yates, 44, who previously worked as a teacher at the Oxford School of Drama, recalled the magical moment that would transform him from being a well regarded director of political dramas into one of the world's best known movie makers.
He said: "The mobile rang It was my agency. 'Do you want to do Harry Potter?' And I said, 'I'm sorry, are you kidding.'"
Emma, the Oxford schoolgirl who plays Hermione Granger, was full of praise for the new man in charge at Hogwarts. She said: "This is the most genuine of all the films. It has a greater sense of realism.
"The word I most connect with David is truth. He always wanted to find the truth in all the characters and in every single performance. We relished that. It stopped us getting complacent the fifth time around.
"It was really lovely because David listened to what we had to say about our characters. He was respectful of the fact that we have been playing these people for five films now."
Daniel Radcliffe is delighted that Mr Yates has already been invited to direct the sixth Potter Film, The Half Blood Prince.
"I think he managed to take the charm and visual flare of the earlier films and add his own sense of grit, that perhaps was not there before. He is a delightful man, very soft-spoken. Yet I have never been pushed as hard as I was on this film, partly because of the nature of the story, and partly because of his directing.
"He always wanted me to go deeper."
Next time around, Mr Yates hints that he is really going to enjoy himself. "The next movie is less intense on one level. It's more sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, I would say."

I think that David Yates ruined the movie. It was and absolute failure. The movie was way too fast paced, leaving out the character's personalities and the magical feel of being at Hogwarts. I assure that I will not go see the Half Blood Prince, if Mr. David Yates is going to be directing it. [bold]bold[/bold]

I don't think Yates spoiled the movies. It's fanstastic and better than any other HP films. Yes it's fast-paced, but we have to admit that it's only a Warner's marketing trick. Yates actually directed a somewhat 3-hours film, i remember reading this before.
I personally love to see dark-mood films. I didnt see any of the first 3 HP films in theater. I saw both HP4&5 in cinemas and of course I'll go to see 6&7.

my name is Sarah and i have just finished reading the 5th book of harry potter and i was excited to see the movie that you directed. but when i found out that you had cut out a very large amount from the book i was appalled. i was also sad to hear your quote in Entertainment Weekly Magazine regarding the 6th movie (he promises) "a playful,very witty movie." im under the impression that the 6th book is not at all "playful" or "witty" for that matter. It is a very serious book. i mean out beloved DUMBLEDOOR is murdered. i am somewhat outraged that such a serious book is going to be turned into a witty movie. i also read that you think that people will become annoyed of the movie if it is too long. i do not feel this way at all. i would have enjoyed the movie so much better if i actually knew what was going on. i mean if i had not of read the book i would have no clue what was happening. i feel that the movie should be as long as possible in order to make important points regarding the series. [bold]bold[/bold] i would have loved to see the movie just like it happened in the book so that i could actually see it through my own eyes rather than my mind. i hope you take the time to read this and consider my feelings.

I really really liked the 5th movie, but like many others was disappointed to see how much was left out. I understand how difficult it must be to fit it all in, but I think you must understand that it is also the little things that make the books and hopefully the movies, so wonderful. okay, so I personally [bold]LIKED[/bold] the OOTP movie. Sure, they left out some parts, but those weren't extremely important. I've read all the books, and yes, I'll admit I was very dissappointed that I couldn't sing along to "Weasley is my King" in t his, but It [bold]IS[/bold] going to be in HBP!!!! It was confirmed. And for those of you who blame David Yates- who is a very good director in my humble opinion- for not putting those parts in the movie, it's not his fault. It's the guy who WROTE it. David was only following the script, so don't blame him, blame the screenwriter.

I'm on the fence. The movie was good, yes (I mean it's HP, and that's all it needs), but it was missing a lot that I felt would have made a better movie. I am praying for an extended director's cut. :)

i would like to congratulate david on HP film he has just directed. I think it was really good and it reflected all the bad feeling and tension voldemort has brought. I would have loved some quidditch. I would also that the film has to be longer. There is just noway you can fit in all the important bit in full including everyword of Harry's lesson with dumbledore without it being a long film so make it a 2 part film that both last 2 hours. I know for a fact that the HP fans wouldn't mind as long as all the important things are put in and trust me i know about 40 ppl who wud like that. I think it would be good to put in quidditch because it's used in the book to break all the worry and tension.

Although Yates left out a lot, no one can deny how awesome the fight at the ministry was. It was so messy and wild: perfect. I loved how he did that scene. And, the casting was great; Imelda was born to play umbridge!
