Beauty spots to receive makeover

TWO Wantage beauty spots will receive a £32,000 makeover after they were attacked by vandals - and ducks.

Letcombe Park and the seven-mile Letcombe Brook will be restored by members of the Letcombe Brook Project with funds from Barratt Homes.

The house-builders landscaped the area in 2002 when they built a 180-home development, but vandals and grazing ducks destroyed their efforts.

Work includes re-building an island under the bridge to reduce the width of the brook and speed up the flow of water, as well as prevent silt from settling. Wildlife numbers will be boosted by replanted vegetation that will be protected from ducks.

A dam would also be removed to protect against flooding.

Sally Wallington, who runs the Letcombe Brook Project to enhance and protect the brook, said: "The project has persevered with this scheme for several years now."

Ms Wallington hoped ownership of the land and responsibility for maintenance would be transferred to the Vale of White Horse District Council.
